Fox Kia, serving Grand Rapids area drivers, is always here to report the latest Kia news, but sometimes, we're also here to dispel false rumors. Recently, a media report claimed that the South Korean auto brand would construct a new manufacturing facility in the United States by next year to easy a capacity shortage. Kia, for its part, has now confirmed that this rumor is completely false.
Kia already has one factory in the U.S., which is located in West Point, Georgia and produces around 360,000 vehicles each year. This plant produces the Kia Sorento SUV, the Kia Optima sedan, and Hyundai's Santa Fe SUV over three work shifts. It employees more than 3,000 people. Kia's sister brand, Hyundai, also has a U.S. factory in Alabama
Georgia state officials have denied having any knowledge of any new active project with Kia, but they have stated they would support any expansions. Last November, Kia did state it would invest $1.6 billion over 16 years on new machinery for the current Georgia plant.
The original report stated that 2010, Kia internally decided to build the new production facilities in Georgia, but held off the plan because of the global economic uncertainty."1
